Hiking on the island of Maui, Hawaii
My favorite full days hike is around the Haleakala Crater.
None of my pictures of this beautiful area scan well enough to put on this page,
If I locate some I'll add them later.
The link at the bottom of this short writeup will take you to an great page which describes the trails available
on Maui including the Haleakala Crater.
Here are a few suggestions of my own.
Suggestion One
- Plan on getting up at approx. 4:00 - 4:30 if you are in Lahaina or Kihei
- Check with the weather service (the number is provided on the local Cable
information channel) to see the expected time of sunrise and expected visability
conditions.
- If appropriate, plan on driving to the top of Haleakala BEFORE sunrise and watch
the sun come up over the crater. This is something very few people have gotten the opportunity to see.
The only downside is the weather, it's often foggy and many many times you won't see anything but
a bit of bright light through the fog, when the sun rises. But bring along
a thermos of coffee or hot chocolate, some munchies and a favorite friend and it's
a good time even if you miss the sunrise. (I've seen it twice on seven attempts)
- Then, after the sun is starting up, either do a round trip from the top of the
crater and back or better yet, bring two vehicles and walk down the crater and then out
via the Poli Poli Trail
Suggestion Two - Oheo Gulch
- Take the drive to Hana and stop at the Oheo Gulch on the way -
bring a swim suit!!
Suggestion Three - Iao Valley
- A must for all tourists - a very easy walk but lots of beautiful
things to see.
- This is the location of the Iao Needle which adorns many picture postcards
and Hawaii posters.
